TODAY we are asking our clients to contact their representatives and ask congress to write ‘network neutrality’ into law. See the latest video at SavetheInternet.com.
Tech support stifle a giggle when refer to ‘the internets.’ There’s only one, and that’s sort of the point of the internet: We’re all in this together: the ultimate equal playing field. In the future, if internet service providers (carriers like verizon, cablevision and comcast) are no longer neutral carriers, then only the web sites that pay ‘toll’ to your internet service provider will be displayed quickly and reliably. The internet will dissolve into separate competing ‘walled gardens’ or ‘internets. ‘ The last laugh will be on us.
In January of 2006, the Washington Post explained what’s at stake: The Coming Tug of War Over the Internet:
The telecommunications companies’ proposals have the potential, within just a few years, to alter the flow of commerce and information — and your personal experience — on the Internet. For the first time, the companies that own the equipment that delivers the Internet to your office, cubicle, den and dorm room could, for a price, give one company priority on their networks over another. This is part of a series of articles on the tools you need to produce professional informative audio and video in-house. Documentary and training media require conversion tools, strict version control and secure (limited access) processes and archives.

In Saving the Net: How to Keep the Carriers from Flushing the Net Down the Tubes on November 16 in Linux Journal., Doc Searls, a respected advocate for open standards on the web, said something important: If we do not act now the net will be privatized. He says the free and open marketplace (enjoyed by both ideas and products) will disappear. Skip to the end of this post for Doc Searls’ Action Items.
David Usher: One of the authors of the cluetrain manifesto who argues that Hollywood and the telco-cable oligopoly want to take over the Internet and make it their new transport (pipes) system and charge for the flow of packets. If you are interested in the battle for the soul and arteries of the Internet, read the complete piece.
Bloggy round-about from samzenpus at Slashdot . Netcetra writes “From a post by on CircleID by Phillip J. Windley: ‘Doc Searls has written a brilliant piece framing the battle for the Net at Linux Journal. … if you take the time to read just one essay on the Net and the politics surround it this year, read this one.’”

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) announced a new legal guide for bloggers:
“Freedom of speech is the foundation of a functioning democracy, and Internet bullies shouldn’t use the law to stifle legitimate free expression. That’s why EFF created this guide, […]to help you understand your rights and, if necessary, defend your freedom. […]
“To be clear, this guide isn’t a substitute for […] legal advice” but reading it will help you avoid trouble down the road.
Once you get past the list of do’s and dont’s, read on to learn how to get a press pass, request records or attend meetings open only to the press…

“The Bloggers’ FAQ on Media Access can help bloggers who need to get access to public records and government meetings, as well as secure press passes to help with newsgathering.[…]
“The Bloggers’ FAQ on Election Law addresses the legal issues you may face when blogging about political campaigns.”
The EFF also has tips about how to blog anonymously, internationally or about sensitive workplace issues.
You may want to visit the EFF Action Center to put this advice in context. Other EFF campaigns argue against the expansion of the Patriot Act, for paper trails in electronic voting and protecting public access to weather data collected by the government.

Read part one of this article in: How to avoid flamewars: pause before posting
Okay, now what to do if someone has made a personal statement about you and it makes you feel angry. How do you deal with that? Well, first, it’s totally okay to feel angry, but you don’t have to act on the anger. It’s a choice. When someone makes a personal statement about you, they’re entering your space, and now it’s time to decide — fight or flight. Do you try to kill the invader, or run away? Now before you send a flame back or run away, let’s come back to reality. Read the rest of this entry »

When you’ve written something strong and personal, before posting, re-read it and pause for a few moments. Re-read what you’ve written and imagine that someone said what you’ve said, about you. Would you like it? Would you feel it was fair? Or would you feel angry? If so, you should probably reword it, so at least you would be okay with it. Read the rest of this entry »
